odd girl out [24 Dec 2009|11:33am]
[ mood | curious ]

i have, after a fashion, with my lowered expectations & aversive reservations, at times in my bountiful social foibles, been a dark horse candidate in the running for the "good sport" award. the good girl award. the nobody puts baby in the corner because she's a wallflower & already there award, the take it like a champ, the you understand, right? award. ad nausea, haha.

but when i saunter ignominiously off that gaudy stage, sashaying bravely with my consolation prize as others more fortunate & more easily accepted/defined clutch each other, reveling in hysterical insincerity, i'm taking the un-coveted & under-appreciated title of miss congeniality with me.

a dual purpose pop culture reference, a bitchy valet & a barren immoral actress notwithstanding. it is not overweeningly ironic, despite being one of the least liked/most quizzically (if at all) remembered of girls. i would at first glance seem a strangely conciliatory choice. the pity vote for the basket case nympho? perhaps. but other than that...
for a certain stripe of disenfranchised underdogs, the underlying & ofttimes overt reserves of empathy that spill out whenever the chance circumstance arises, stems from an ardent desire to relate to to demystify &, obstensibly, shirk the cruelty & incomprehension of others via understanding if not compassion.
a very selfish brand of altruism, to be sure. but social interdependancy demands it, & so...

it seems these days it's simply a point of reflection after the most recent round of nursing a significantly bruised heart & licking my back-bitten battle wounds.

weird crazy ugly poor. all this & so much more. the girl that you abhor.

let's try wild free uncanny guileless. a treasure that you'll never know. a sweet tart made to break your heart.

an alluring antipathy somehow at peace. giggles madly & bestows gentle pity, tries patience with & observes the fragility of her would-be destroyers. reminded that her purpose is for peace, & that she is not as they are. & so she uses all the double-edges of that blade to cut through unfettered to see what we will see.

the things that run through my mind sometimes... [24 Dec 2009|05:29am]
[ mood | quixotic ]

an eve of remembered revelations, gifted mystery pills, & dissociative, intimate wounding. immediate or estranged, be it seethingly polite or sweetly pernicious, solitaire beats flush every time these days.

a black white & red memorial to a starlet cut down, a bitter reminder of death's quality of selection & also it's jilts.

cannabis, percoset & yerba mate well after 4 am on a cold, dark night.

a preamble to parable-
it's just not worth getting frustrated & succumbing to self-fulfilling prophecies of ineptitude. demoralizing if not counter-productive, as it can cause the subject to operate obsequiously.

a caution-
even if you know yourself & your worth better than they, never allow yourself to be too negligent in cultivating your awareness of the sundry & cohesive perspectives of others. but never inculcate it.

a moral-
do not court miss fortune nor lady luck. calamity jane wins out every time.

chris benoit & nancy "woman" benoit r.i.p. [26 Jun 2007|11:56am]
[ mood | scared ]

the world is a sick and scary place sometimes. they were found slain along with (i believe theirs, he may have been from another marriage) their 7 year old son yesterday afternoon.
chris benoit was one of my favorite wrestlers. i believe he was the last truly great working technical wrestler in existance. as a long time on-and-off wrestling fan, i can sadly state that this is one of the greatest losses to the industry ever.

the canadian crippler, rabid wolverine... he (accidentally) broke sabu's neck. he looked great in every promotion he was ever in. from mexico, to japan, canada to the USA, he was a phenomenonal talent. he was too tough to fix his knocked out teeth, and he probably had the best body of any 40 year old man, anywhere. he was a proficient mat wrestler, a submission specialist, and had some nice arial moves as well. his character was a stoic bad-ass, and some thought his lack of acting hindered his getting over big. but he seemed too real a person to lay on heavy histrionics or fakery. he had too much class to participate in the "vince is dead" angle. the interviews and the match that preceeded the late great eddie guerrero's death that he did participate in are the only ones that brought me to tears, such was his sincerity. the overall integrity that chris benoit brought to wrestling cannot be overstated.

his wife, known better a woman, the ex-wife of kevin sullivan who left sullivan in angle (wcw) and in life for chris benoit, may be remembered by some of my lj friends as sandman's valet woman, weilder of kendo canes and wearer of sequin evening gowns when other valets were going for a more contemporary look and role. she was a terrific valet, an old-school troublemaker but above it all, a lady.

it's pretty fucking surreal and atrocious. since it looked like they were gonna give benoit the ecw belt, i was hoping once i heard about this that this was a bad angle, fodder for tasteless jokes. but that it's true? how awful and gruesome and heartbreaking.
i'm still stunned. not to mention, i'm still in some amount of shock from the death of sensational sherri. but fuck. almost an entire family (two other children were not in the house at the time, ostensibly with other family or parent from a former marriage) slain in the night. i mean, there's just so much gory speculation, i feel awful doing it. but there you go... murder suicide? execution?
tragic, random, sad.

*edit* many outlets report that it indeed looks like chris benoit murdered his wife and child before taking his own life monday. the wwe are disassociating themselves from him and focusing on the family. after taking the time slot slated for stupid fake vince macmahon is dead bullshit and alloting it to a chris benoit tribute...
even if he did it, chris benoit is still dead. it just makes this all the more bizarre and tragic.

r.i.p. chris benoit, nancy benoit, and daniel benoit.

r.i.p. sensational sherri martel [19 Jun 2007|12:07pm]
[ mood | melancholy ]

scary sherri, sista sherri... the sensational one...

the woman who was an icon of womanliness from my childhood, who made the prospect of "growing up" bearable with her bizarre beauty, wildness, meritricious glamour and overall impish inappropriateness, and all with that smile. what a lady she was.

wish i'd made it out to those indy cards she'd occasionally do in long island and new jersey, because i always wanted to meet her and thank her for being such a good bad influence and for her amazingness.

when i was a teenage dancer, i did not pick my name from the street or town i grew up on or in. i won't share them here. they'd be great if i wanted to be a gangsta rapper or something, but not a pole dancer. so i was sherri vachon, the combination of the first and surname of my two favorite wrestling ladies.

it was good to be in the company of friends when i heard, a little late, i suppose. but she was young to pass on, only 49. and she'd looked incredible at her induction to the wwe hall of fame so who knew?

there should be books, movies tributes galore for this inimitable and strange performer, her contributions to the indistry recognized and appreciated. we shall see, i suppose...

r.i.p. sherri. i love you, lady!

does anyone remember that king missile song???
you may know them from their "detachable penis" success...

so is anyone else ridiculously psyched for grindhouse? i've been waiting since i saw a sneak preview last year. i need to form a posse and go see that shit. becuse oh my, biker danny trejo! stripper amputee ass-kicking cyborg rose macgowan! in a miniskirt!

i love the teenage mutant ninja turtles from the cartoon back in the day. i watched it religiously. like seriously, if you asked me to sing you the theme song. i probably could. in its entirety. i'm not sure i want to see the movie, but i saw the live action ones, at least two of them. ahh, corey feldman (can't remember which one he was tho) and kevin nash as supershredder... hahaha!
i've been psyched for spiderman 3 because oohhhh it's VEMON and some comic dorks like myself speculate that it will be a lead in to CARNAGE...

so yeah. i am very immature. stunted, even! and i spilled salsa on my white skirt so it's hanging over the shower rod of the apartment i am sitting for and i have to go out soon... at least it's nice out!

it's thursday [08 Mar 2007|05:22pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

this weekend is supposed to go up to the 50's! yay! time to bring my big blue bastard bike back out. but my gears have been a little wonky, so hopefully my bike-fixin' and wrestling appreciating buddy dennis can hook a sista up. i left him a message, if he was up for some tna watching (though it's kind of going into the toilet sadly, get sting and steiner the fuck out of there!) and bike appraising to give me a call back. otherwise i'll sit in and watch freddy's nightmares on the chiller channel (yay again!) and hope samoa joe does something cool thereafter... psst... i think he's cute. ;)

amy goodman is one of my two biggest journalistic heroes, the other being hunter s thompson. an interesting juxtaposition, but they both have/had methods, ethics and styles that i greatly appreciate and admire for vastly different reasons. ms goodman is one tough cookie and she pulls no punches about her left-leaning investigative insights, all the while remaining respectful and calm in the wake of right-wing hegemonic backlash, media source/access conglomeration (no, not the good kind) and public broadcasting being more legitimately threatened into extinction than ever before. her radio and world link tv program is called democracy now from new york.
http://www.democracynow.org
among other things, there are some heartbreaking but *crucial* for my fellow americans to read articles about what the israeli military has done to lebanon, the civilian casualties and the toll on survivors. bear in mind that this is where some of your (and my) tax dollars go, regardless of your political stance, there's right and wrong things human beings do, and there's appropriate responses and justifiable targets. period.

ok, enough ranting!
really i think i just want to go back to school and either
a) finish my political sciences degree
b) pursue more media ethics classes, which i took some electives in, second only to gender theory.

update! [02 Mar 2007|05:28pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

no long-winded political rant for you guys this time, haha!

for those that don't know, i've been very sick. but this week i've gradually gotten better. i was so ill i dropped 10 pounds in a week. i'm just saggy skin and bones, it's disgusting. but i am determined to fatten up. yeah.
i am just so happy to be feeling well again, and i am almost all better. it's good to have a reason to just feel happy, without drugs or drinking. i just woke up one day and realized that for more than half of my life i've had substance abuse problems, and it depressed the shit out of me. i started when i was 11, stealing my mom's coke and weed and getting 40's from the local deli by plying on the make-up and wearing low cut mariah carrey bodysuits with padded push-up bras.... (enter edith bunker voice) "those were the daaaays" *sarcasm ends now.*
i need to just let life feel good. all by itself. and even crappy and boring sometimes.
it was getting to the point where it was more habitual than pleasurable, anyway. so i'm trying. i feel more optimistic than when i started, which was right before i got so sick! i could really use the appetite stimulant right about now, though! but i've quit, in my storied and oft-times quite notorious drug career, heroin, speed, coke, drinking, cigarettes and weed, i feel like my willpower is mighty mighty. shit. i met bebe buell when i was 18 and she compared me to nancy spungen. (i was on smack when i met her) and that's someone who knew the woman. actually i've been told she was really a smart and sad person with poor social skills and who was a major drug hog, which is the real reason she was so disliked.
i digress....

oh! in more happy news, guess who got her little ass on the guest list for every night of the pogues?
yay!

also, i swiped this pic from the perros del mal fan page on the bastardly myspace. i love these fuckers, halloween and damian666!

holy fuck no!!!!!!! no ghoulani in 08!!!!!!! [15 Feb 2007|11:53am]
[ mood | worried ]

please. voters. DO NOT ELECT RUDY GHOULANI FOR PRESIDENT!

i am so scared right now, because i know history goes 12 republican years to 8 democrat. and since everyone NOT in nyc (and a bunch of misguided souls NOW living in the rotten apple) may not have some of this information, i'm posting it here, in the haze of my nyquill hangover....

johnny heff, guitarist for the working class punk band the bullys, was a firefighter. to be fully accurate, a part time firefighter. well, reguardless of your assesment of how 9-11 was mishandled and the subesquent effect it had on both domestic and international policy, you should know this. johnny was in one of the first firehouses to respond to the world trade center site. johnny ran into a building that was about to fall down TO SAVE PEOPLE'S FUCKING LIVES! he DIED HORRIBLY. and when other response/rescue teams were allowed to sift through the wreckage, his fellow firefighter brother discovered johnny's body in the mass of smoldering rubble.
rudy ghoulani and his administration, despite all the public lipservice, DENIED JOHNNY'S WIDOW AND THEIR TWO DAUGHTERS WHO HAD NO MEANS OF SUPPORT SAVE JOHNNY, BENIFITS. and they were not the only ones, though a few friends' businesses were given a pittance for their proximity to a toxic zone and the affect the tragedy had on their business revenue. back to johnny... benifits to widow and children DENIED. reason cited? he was only a part-time firefighter. as if his sacrifice was any less noble. you know who helped johnny's family??? all us piece of shit punk rockers that ghoulani's "quality of life campaign" tried to drive out of the city. yes, that's right. they put on benifits to raise proceeds for his family.

george tabb, from a few local punk bands, lived in one of the more toxic zones, and was told, as were all the relief workers ghoulani publiclly commended and privately condemned, that the fallout was not enough to be concerned about, no long term health ramifications. cut to now, over 3 feet of intestines removed and he's STILL dying.

the "quality of life" campaign, to which we retorted, "WHOSE quality of life?". also known to denizens as gentrifuckation. gentrifying is the cute little euphemism thrown around by mouthpieces and unapologetic vultures to denote a caste and class-specific instutionalized civil war campaign. have you heard of this? it was a contrived and controlled effort to clear out the "scum" so higher income real estate, affluent colllege kids, and business chains could set up shop in the lower east side. homelessness "disappeared" not because people were no longer homeless, but because they were "cleared away" to make the city more tourist friendly. and also, for example, cutting millions in funding to aids relief and research programs and taking the money (part of it, anyway) to build ice sculptures in the upper west side for the rich folks to enjoy. the "disney-fication" of times square, a war on women, sex workers, single moms trying to earn a decent living. i could go on, there's much more...

but in terms of culture... punk clubs, strip clubs and dyke bars were raided as frequently as a biweekly basis and harassed and ticketed into being forcibly shut down. this was done in semi-legal loopholes, and businesses were padlocked (a practice revisited in the impending gentrificacation of coney island) and other unethical means were employed to effectively run the rats out so the big money could come in. rents raised to astronomical proportions, no more cool clubs, indepedant art galleries...
an interesting note, relevant to both state and nation... there were more civil rights violations and shootings of unarmed minority men right before 9-11 then there had been in a loooong time. cop rapists, abuses, unjustifiable homicides... i mean, the nation was divided, a man dragged to his death, it was national and state turmoil and unrest and divisiveness that was gonna boil over into something nasty but ultimately necessary. though you may not remember in all the knee-jerk patriotic hoopla that folllowed in the wake of more sensational events. then, all these social problems went on the back-burner, because *gasp* a ready-made media boogeyman was brought to the forefront of national consciousness. a foreign threat to assuage the national concerns, don't worry that the man is still standing on your neck, because those towelheads, yeah, those guys over there, it's them, it's their fault, they are a greater threat though they are living in abject poverty and far, far away. and if you are my age or older and did not learn in elementry shcool and beyond that the arabs pray every night for american children to die, you are either a liar or went to a fuck of a liberal school.

so forget about racial profiling, let's all do it ourselves! i witnessed in horror black high school girls beating the shit out of muslim and hindu indian girls with total impunity, some of whom were also black, on a regular basis, as i was taking the train to work. why differentiate, little darlings, they're all brown, right? let's forget about that excuse being used to lynch and torture and enslave your foremothers and forefathers, right? then, even moderate fence sitters enlisted to "kill the sandniggers". so let's commend the dumbest president in the past 100 years. let's unite the nation... in blind seething hatred. and who gets to go on the front lines to die while rich white boys come home alive? hmm??? hmmm!?!?

it is interesting to note how social movements and strife coincide with the beginning or end of international conflict. also how the rise of the rate of violent rapes are in direct correlation to bringing the boys back home. and how whenever the nation is in dire straits insofar as civil unrest, an international threat pops up to "destroy the american way of life" and all our eggs go into that basket. let's forget that bush cut veteran's benifits as soon as this shit started, spent the entire budget in the first few months, or the methamphetamines being given to soldiers, mostly male, right fucking now as "supplements" to "keep them going". not to warp them or make them delusional, angry and violent as a gorilla on pcp. look at the domestic social events immediately preceeding any international war, or even following it. crime and drug abuse on the rise, flood the inner-cities with foul shit, blame it all on al-queda. it's not conspiracy theory bullshit, the information is out there! but i won't do all the homework, nor can i...

i'll come right out and say it at the risk of discrediting all i've written above...
we did not engineer 9-11. we simply allowed it to happen because it was deemed necessary by the powers that be to quell any other kind of uprising, it was a diversionary tactic and politicians don't give a shit about any of us, not just black people (but thanks kanye west!) we're all expendable for the greater good, or in this case greater evil.

i am going to update more on this topic, how can i not?

in closing, please spread the word, or at least think about the negative impact ghoulani will have on national and international policy, don't let the spin nor the whitewash get to you, this man is dispicable, a villan, not a hero, despite his status as syampthetic media darling. with all commerical/mainstream media being shifted into the sources of 3-4 conglomerates, how can the whole truth get out there? i am so scared. i am so worried. i am so FURIOUS!

i love astrid hadad! [14 Feb 2007|10:15pm]
[ mood | enthralled ]

some of you may remember me raving about this lebanese-mexican cabaret singer. i had the enormous pleasure of seeing her live at la bodega in mexico city on my trip there in december. it was a remarkable and life-altering experience. seriously. she was lovely and gracious enough to come out and greet her fans after the show. she came to our table after learning that someone had traveled to mexico city from new york city to see her as a primary agenda, and i addressed her in spanglish before she told me i could "speak english now". i gushed a respectful bit and also mentioned our common ethnic/mixed heritage (lebanese for those that don't know) and she LAID HANDS UPON ME, my lebanese sister, our people are in such peril right now, ahhhh. it was so moving and profound, oh my, oh my. we took a pic together, in which she comes up to my nose. bear in mind i was wearing converse and she wore 6 inch hooker/drag queen shoes. so tiny and so powerful!
a diva in the most honorable sense. this woman changes costumes between EVERY SONG. and it's not any old costume, they are so ornate and elaborate and ostentatious. incredible. she reworks traditional bolero and ranchera songs as well as writes her own. her energy is astonishing, and the power and range and emotion that she projects with her voice and mannerisms is inspiring. she creates such ambience and works politics, sex, humor and tragedy into every set with equal aplomb.
i wish she'd do a showcase with diamanda galas (whom i also had the pleasure of seeing recently at joe's pub in nyc), i have a feeling those two broads would get along, haha! one of the swell fellas who showed me around took some camera phone pics, so in this entry, i'm using one. from corazon sangrante, an original work and the eponymous c.d. title which she was gracious enough to sign "d*****, with love, astrid hadad".

ah, memories of mexico. i'm gonna go back again. mexico city is da bomb. period. also, i miss the super sweet guy i met there...

learning to defy death in a livingroom [05 Feb 2007|12:03pm]
[ mood | excited ]

well.... sort of.

yesterday while many others were watching the stupidbowl (sorry football fans, wake me when it's soccer or hockey!) i visited sideshows by the seashore alumni eak the geek. we've been talking for some time now about me learning a few tricks of the trade from him. it's a real honor and privilege because the sideshow world can be very competitive and subsequently they tend to jealously guard their secrets. which is understandable. why train possible competition in an already quite saturated and fishbowling industry? but since i am of such a different frame and have another presentation entirely towards it, and since eak and i do want to do some shows together in the near furure, he invited me over for snacks, conversation, and bed of nails training. and if i can work on the same bed of nails as a 6'1" well over 200 lbs mexico city madman, well, i think i'm starting it off right. we were going to work on broken glass as well, but it was too cold! yes, temperature makes a difference.... especially if you want to break glass outside and not your apartment floor...

so i got on the bed of nails. it was a new model and pretty sharp and very big! i was a bit of a baby at first, so sure i would tear my creamy flesh and rip bits of it off! but with guidance and a spotter to help me off the bed of nails, i had more confidence and kept on trying, he even had me try to walk across it! so i did some dance and yoga poses, tried to get the feel of it, and felt very good about the experience overall. i got pointers on how to construct my own bed of nails and some other very useful tips and hints. it is a learn by trial process, no matter what your training, you will probably be hurt one day, you have to face the possibility, anticipate it and cope. otherwise doen't even try it! so in our next session, which will be lengthier, i shall bring music and choreograph a little 2 minute cabaret/burlesque piece on it. eventually i'll be able to take weight as i lay on the bed of nails and even have a cinderblock broken on my tummy, yay!

i can't wait to have a bed of nails for my very own! i'll practice every day and come up with a funny, entertaining and perhaps even a sexy act! and i shall name my bed of nails, as i name all my favorite apparatuses. for example, my bass is named richard...

ok, off to do some yoga and maybe ride my bike while it's not too bitter out and the sun's a shinin'....

and last saturday, i got to throw blood and brains and bloody tampons and stuff off the stage at the carnivore show. backstage i witnessed and even participated in all sorts of shenanigans, including violating a blow up doll and drinking lots of beer with hot identical metal twins in their underwear. at duff's, the coolest bar in brooklyn with the hottest bartenders, both before the show and at the afterparty i drank many pbr's and shots of souza. it was great.
for proof of some of this madness, check out the pics section at http://www.myspace.com/duffsbrooklyn
i think i should try to get a job at that place....

also... SNOW!!!
